Finnish Border Guard will have two multipurpose patrol vessels built by Meyer Turku

The Border Guard is acquiring two new multi-purpose patrol vessels from Meyer Turku.

In a tender held in 2021, the Finnish Border Guard selected Meyer Turku Oy as the supplier. The parties signed a shipbuilding agreement in Helsinki, June 29, 2022. The basic design of the new ships will begin immediately. The first ship will be completed in 2025 and the second ship in 2026. The ships are assembled and equipped in Finland. Some hulls are manufactured elsewhere in the EU.

“We are proud of the Border Guard’s trust in Meyer Turku and the Finnish shipbuilding industry. We are strongly recovering from the crisis caused by the corona pandemic and the war in Ukraine, and we are showing that we can also serve the Border Guard with our state-of-the-art products”

Tapani Pulli, Executive Vice President of Meyer Turku.

The introduction of new high-performance ships will significantly improve Finland’s maritime safety in the fundamentally changed security environment of our country. The control and influence of vessels will be developed taking into account the requirements of the changed situation. The exchange of situation information with the Defense Forces is seamless. The ability of people to mass evacuate is growing. The readiness to manage serious environmental accidents on all ships is immediate and the collection capacity will be approximately doubled. The ships are designed to be low-emission and energy-efficient. The machine solution is a modern dualfuel hybrid.

Parliament has granted EUR 448 million for the purchase of ships. euro order authorization. Funding will also be sought from the EU’s financial instrument for border security and visa policy.

Since 2019, the Border Guard Project has been running at the Border Guard. The aim is to replace three obsolete patrol vessels with two Security-class patrol vessels. The new ships will be in service until the 2050s.
