Mid-air crash at Beja Air Show

During the Beja Air Show in Portugal, two Yakovlev Yak-52 aircraft belonging to the Spanish-Portuguese Yakstars formation team collided.
The pilot of one aircraft died in the crash. The other aircraft in the crash made a safe landing.

According to accident videos, one aircraft broke away from the six-ship formation and ascended steeply in ahead of the five other aircraft that were in a Vic-formation. The lead Yak-52 was struck by the aircraft during this move. The aircraft that was climbing lost control and crashed. A post-collision fire broke out.

The Portuguese Air Force also announced the incident on its social media platforms that the incident occured at 1605hrs and that emergency services where on the scene following the Airshow’s Emergency response plans.
