USS Lewis B. Puller undergoes repairs at Palumbo Shipyard

The USS LEWIS B. PULLER (ESB-3) arrived in Malta on May 27, 2025, for an extended visit as it undergoes repairs at Palumbo Shipyard. The ship is an Expeditionary Sea Base (ESB) ship subordinate to Naval Surface Force Atlantic (SURFLANT), which comprises 71 ships and 31 shore commands.  The USS LEWIS B. PULLER has a mixed crew of approximately 150 U.S. Navy Sailors and civilian mariners from the Military Sealift Command.  The motto of the USS LEWIS B. PULLER is “Courage, Leadership, Duty,” and before arriving in Malta she operated in the FIFTH Fleet area of responsibility conducting a wide range of maritime operations, including special operations and airborne missions.

A sister ship, USS HERSHEL “WOODY” WILLIAMS (ESB-4), was in Palumbo Shipyard from March to July 2023.  These maintenance visits promote the maritime partnership between the United States and Malta, while also contributing significantly to the Maltese economy.

“We’re excited to welcome the USS LEWIS B. PULLER and its crew to Malta.  The United States greatly appreciates the technical expertise offered at the Maltese dockyard, which is not available in many other locations, as the ship undergoes critical repairs and maintenance.”

Ken Toko, U.S. Chargé d’Affaires

While the USS LEWIS B. PULLER is undergoing repairs, the officers and crew are enjoying shore leave and immersing themselves in the cultural and historic heritage of Malta, including volunteer and sport activities.

“It was my privilege to command a ship into the Grand Harbor, and the crew and I were overwhelmed by the hospitality and kindness of the Maltese people.  I look forward to returning soon.” Commander Philip Cox said, “It’s exciting to take command in such an historic location.  PULLER’s maintenance period is off to a great start, and we are taking advantage of the capabilities of the skilled dockyard crews in Malta.”

Captain Raul Acevedo

On June 13, the military crew of the USS LEWIS B. PULLER had a change of command in which Commander Philip Cox relieved Captain Raul Acevedo.
