Italian Navy orders two PPA Multi-Mission Combat vessels

- The two units will replace those sold to Indonesia

Fincantieri strengthens its strategic role in the Italian Navy’s fleet renewal program with a new contract for the construction of two PPA – Multipurpose Combat Ship units, which will replace those sold to the Indonesian Navy.

The integration of the contract, initiated with the latest “Naval Law”, is managed by OCCAR ( Organisation Conjointe de Coopération en matière d’Armement ) within the Temporary Business Consortium (RTI), established between Fincantieri, agent, and Leonardo, principal. For Fincantieri, the value of the contract for the two new units is approximately 700 million euros, a value that includes activities already carried out for the previous units subsequently sold to Indonesia.

The two new PPA – Multipurpose Combat Ship , in the “ Light Plus ” configuration, will be built by Fincantieri at the Integrated Shipyard of Riva Trigoso and Muggiano, with deliveries scheduled for 2029 and 2030 respectively.

“This contract confirms the strategic value of the program, highlighting the ability of our Group to respond promptly and effectively to the operational needs of the Navy. The new units strengthen the national supply chain, ensuring production continuity and employment stability and contribute to consolidating Italy’s role as a central player in the global geopolitical defense scenario, where shipbuilding is increasingly a key element of international influence and cooperation”

Pierroberto Folgiero, CEO and General Manager of Fincantieri

Technical characteristics of the unit: PPA – Multipurpose Combat Ship

The PPA – Multipurpose Combat Ship represents a highly flexible type of vessel with the ability to perform multiple tasks ranging from patrolling with sea rescue capabilities, to Civil Protection operations, as well as a front-line fighting vessel. Furthermore, the unit is able to use fast boats such as RHIB ( Rigid Hull Inflatable Boat ) up to a length of over 11 meters via lateral cranes or a launching ramp located at the stern.

  • Speed over 31 knots
  • 171 crew members
  • Equipped with a combined diesel and gas turbine propulsion system (CODAG) and an electric propulsion system
