The official facebook page of Spangdahlem Air base, said “A U.S. Air Force F-16 Fighting Falcon assigned to the 52nd Fighter Wing crashed at approximately 2:30 p.m. on Sept. 22.”
Residents in Binsfeld reported to German broadcaster SWR that they saw a massive cloud of smoke and saw a major emergency response from the local police and fire department.
The pilot was reportedly trying to land at the time of the crash. Before the aircraft crashed onto a golf course close to the B50 road between Binsfeld and Spangdahlem, he was able to safely eject the aircraft.
One individual was hurt in the incident, according to the authorities. Officials have not yet revealed the crash’s cause or provided any other information. Four F-16s were getting ready to land as part of a training exercise when the incident occurred. The final three planes were diverted to Ramstein air base.
