German Navy 212A Submarine U35 visits Malta

A Maiden Call for this German Navy U35 (S185) Submarine in Valletta Malta earlier today. The U-35 (S185) is a Type 212A submarine and is the fifth ship of the class to enter service.

She was laid down in August 2007 by Howaldtswerke, Kiel, launched in November 2011 and commissioned on 23 March 2015. She is under the patronage of the city of Zweibrücken, in Rhineland-Palatinate. Her sponsor is Sigrid Hubert-Reichling, wife of the Lord Mayor of Zweibrücken, Helmut Reichling.

A range of improvements distinguishes the U 35 from her four older sister ships. This second generation of submarines is specifically optimized for deployments around the world. The boat has a bigger reservoir, improved air-conditioning, a new combat system and is equipped with a hatch that allows divers to exit the submarine while underwater.

Additionally, the U 35 features a communication buoy that allows the boat to send and receive messages while travelling at greater depths. The buoy is connected to the boat via a cable that adjusts length automatically allowing the commander to travel at whatever speed or depth he prefers.
