The second Taigei-class submarine was officially commissioned by the Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF).

The submarine is named JS Hakugei. The sonar system of the Taigei submarine has better detection abilities. It has an innovative, stealth-like design and a lithium battery system that provides quiet operation and extended endurance.

With a length of 84 meters and a width of 9.1 meters, the 3000 ton submarine has room for roughly 70 people. It is propelled by a diesel-electric system.

The third Taigei-class submarine was named and launched in October 2022. The first submarine in the class, Taigei, was commissioned last March.
