SWISS’s first Airbus A350 arrives in its new Zurich home

After a prolonged period of anticipation, SWISS has officially received its first Airbus A350-900. These state-of-the-art widebody twinjets will enhance the airline’s long-haul fleet, with the inaugural aircraft expected to make its transatlantic debut to Boston around November 20.

SWISS has named its first Airbus A350-900 ‘Lausanne’ and decorated it with a striking wanderlust-themed livery, serving as a vibrant homage to Switzerland. The airline has a total of 10 A350s on order, with the remaining deliveries scheduled to occur by 2031. Beyond being a more modern and fuel-efficient long-haul aircraft, the A350 also represents a significant upgrade in passenger experience, as it will feature a new, enhanced cabin design.

The aircraft’s arrival was marked by a water cannon salute from the airport’s fire service, with scores of employees and fans watching the proceedings from the observation deck.

“This aircraft represents everything we aim to be moving forward: efficient, advanced, and clearly positioned as a premium airline, from Switzerland and for Switzerland. With the A350, we’re taking a huge leap forward. With our Airbus A350, we’re transporting our customers into a new era of long-haul air travel. These jets will be used, among other things, to replace SWISS’s aging fleet of Airbus A340-300 quadjets.”

Jens Fehlinger, CEO of SWISS

The Airbus A350-900 is the first aircraft in the SWISS long-haul fleet to be equipped with the new SWISS Senses cabin. Designed to provide a more personal and comfortable air travel experience for passengers in all seating classes. The aircraft cabin is configured with a four-class layout, offering three suites up to four seats in First Class, 45 seats in Business, 38 in Premium Economy, and 156 in Economy.

The A350 is the world’s most modern widebody aircraft and has set new standards for intercontinental travel. The A350’s all-new design includes state-of-the-art technologies and aerodynamics delivering unmatched standards of efficiency and comfort. Its new generation engines and use of lightweight materials bring a 25 per cent advantage in fuel burn, operating costs and carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions, compared to previous generation competitor aircraft. The A350-900 is equipped with a comfortable and spacious Airspace cabin, wide seats, high ceilings and alluring ambient lighting.
