A commissioning ceremony has been conducted by the Nigerian Navy for three new patrol boats, three Leonardo AW109 Trekker helicopters, and the inauguration of newly reconstructed Base Flats for personnel.
The event took place in Lagos on May 31, 2025, as revealed, during the celebration of the navy’s 69th anniversary. The three newly commissioned warships—NNS Faro, NNS SHERE, and NNS Ikogosi—are fast patrol boats with high endurance, intended for quick responses and prolonged operations within Nigeria’s maritime territory.
Moreover, the navy incorporated three Agusta Westland AW109 Trekker helicopters into its fleet, identified by the visual call-signs NN501, NN502, and NN503.
The helicopters are outfitted for over-the-horizon patrols, maritime surveillance, and targeting operations, greatly enhancing the navy’s aerial capabilities.
The reconstructed Base Flats, which offer accommodation for junior naval officers, were officially commissioned to conclude the day’s activities. This facility comprises 207 single-bedroom apartments designed to enhance the living conditions and welfare of personnel.
This occasion signifies an important landmark in the Navy’s path, showcasing its status as Africa’s third-largest naval force.
Bello Mohammed Matawalle, the Minister of State for Defence (HMOSD), characterized the commissioning ceremony as a strategic initiative aimed at securing Nigeria’s maritime domain and protecting its economic interests.
This January, a fast crew supplier (FCS) 3307 patrol vessel was delivered by Damen Shipyards Cape Town, part of the Dutch shipbuilding giant Damen, to Nigerian Homeland Integrated Offshore Services (Homeland IOSL).
