VARD , the Norwegian subsidiary of the Fincantieri Group and one of the world’s leading companies in the construction of specialized vessels , has delivered two of the world’s first vessels equipped with cyber notation. These are the two Commissioning Service Operation Vessels (CSOV) “Grampian Kestrel” and “Purus Chinook”, built for North Star and Purus respectively.
In compliance with the new regulations in force from 1 July 2024, the two CSOV units feature cutting-edge solutions that strengthen their operational capabilities, allowing them to withstand cyber attacks, continue operating during the attack and quickly restore full functionality. They feature all mandatory cybersecurity requirements and related class notations, confirming that cyber resilience as well as innovation of VARD vessels is an integral part of the construction process, from concept to delivery.
The notations obtained comply with the IACS ( International Association of Class Societies ) UR E26 and E27 requirements, mandatory for all new buildings contracted starting from 1 July 2024. These two ships were instead contracted in 2023, before the regulations came into force , demonstrating the foresight and determination with which VARD , together with Purus and North Star , has addressed the issue of cyber security.
The delivery of these two ships represents a historic milestone for the maritime industry, strengthening the Fincantieri Group’s leadership position in technological transition and its constant commitment to promoting cutting-edge engineering and environmental sustainability through advanced technological solutions.
VARD’s excellence and innovation have recently been recognised with the prestigious “ Ship of the Year 2025 ” award, received by the specialised magazine Skipsrevyen for the cable-laying vessel “Prysmian Monna Lisa”.
“Prysmian Monna Lisa” was awarded for being the most innovative vessel of its kind , thanks to its ability to operate in deep waters at more than 3,000 metres and to one of the highest cable loads on the market, with two 7,000 and 10,000 tonne trolleys. It features operational efficiency and high environmental performance , thanks to an improved energy storage system that doubles the capacity of its sister vessel “Leonardo da Vinci”, and to a high voltage shore connection that allows it to operate, once in port, with zero CO2 emissions. Furthermore, the vessel can be used in any type of offshore project — from shallow to deep waters — including cable burial using a wide range of ROV vehicles.
The prize, received at Nor-Shipping, Norway’s most important maritime business event, has annually honored the shipbuilding industry that has stood out for progress and innovation since 1997.
